PROJECT AUTISM AND SPORT: TRAINING FOR SOCIAL INCLUSION

The activities of the project “Autism and sport: training for social inclusion”; proposed and
coordinated by the Italian entity Running Matera and funded by the European Commission,
within the framework of the Erasmus + Sport 2019 program, began in 2020.

Autism and Sports is a project whose main objective is to promote social inclusion and equal
opportunities in the sports sector, through greater participation in sports activities by
adolescents and young people with autism spectrum disorder (ASD).

The objective of the project is to initiate a path of sustainable and continuous learning that
connects social workers, sports coaches from sports clubs, associations and other interested
entities towards greater participation in sports and educational activities.

The following sports disciplines will be practiced: athletics, orientation, swimming, soccer,
basketball, table tennis and horse riding aimed at children and adolescents with autism.

The project, with a duration of 24 months, will have the participation and participation of 8
partners from 4 European countries.

The project is composed of: Associatia autism Baia Mare (Romania), Nodibinajums Spring
(Latvia), Association for the care of people with autism (Croatia), Stella Maris Mediterraneo
Foundation (Chiaromonte) and Italian Federation of Paralympic Sports Intelectivo Relational
FISDIR (Rome).

The specific objectives are:

Strengthen the use of sport as a tool for social inclusion.
awareness of the potential of sport in the rehabilitative treatment of ASD
Train social-health workers and sports volunteers
Implement promotion and incentive programs for sports activities for people with ASD
Increase knowledge about EU, national, regional and local policies on best teaching practices
and social inclusion through sport.
The first meeting was scheduled in Matera (Italy) on March 20, 2020. Due to COVID19, the
start of the project has been postponed.
Autismo Burgos participated in 2017 in the first international sport meeting for people with
autism, which took place in Italy. The experience (a pioneer in the world of autism at the
European level) was very positive, participating in swimming tests.
