Successful communication is the right and need of every individual. Ensuring the conditions for the realization of the fundamental human right, the right to communication, is defined by the Charter of Communication Rights.
Non-verbal or augmentative communication is used by individuals with autism spectrum disorder, people with multiple intellectual or communication difficulties, Down syndrome, cerebral palsy, delayed speech development, and more. Communication boards are just one form of support system that allows a person with speech difficulties to communicate. As part of the implementation of the project “Rearview mirror – people with developmental difficulties are closer than they apear,” we have successfully installed our first communication board located at the Potok Children’s Playground, in front of the Ivan Brlić Mažuranić Children’s Home. Within the framework of the “Retrovizor” project, five communication boards will be installed, and in addition to Rijeka’s parks, the boards will also find their place at the Center for Autism and the Centar Primary School. As explained by Valeri Drača, a student at Centar Primary School, the first location where the board was installed was chosen at Potok Park because it is close to the Center for Autism, and the students assessed that a communication board was most needed there.
The project is implemented in partnership with Centar Primary School and the Center for Autism Rijeka, and our kids want to tell you: “This is just the beginning!”
